A trip to Ladakh is something we have always dreamed about, right?

If you are going on a solo trip for 14 days then you’ll need to map out everything from travel and transfers to food and accommodation. Everyone thinks that a trip to Ladakh is very costly and can only be done on a big budget. This isn’t true. If you research and gather information well enough and design a well-planned itinerary, your Ladakh trip cost can be within your budget.

The first thing we need to understand is that this is a rough example. Costs will vary on the basis of your travel preference – solo or in a group. If you wish to take it slow and take a gap between days before travelling, then costs will go up as well. It will also depend on your mode of transportation and where you decide to stay during your trip. You also need to know about a lot of things like obtaining inner limits passes that will allow you to visit places like Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso.

However, to calculate your Leh Ladakh trip cost, break it into three major aspects –

  • What is your mode of travel?
  • What are your accommodation preferences?
  • What are your eating habits?

Others are simply additions to these three aspects.

Let us consider each of these components separately to understand the cost of the Ladakh trip in detail.

The first thing that we should look at is accommodation:-

Accommodation: According to the accommodation you choose, you will have to spend somewhere between INR 11,000 to 14,000 for a 14 day trip including food and other expenses.

If you are staying at an affordable place with some basic comforts then costs per day including food and other things will come up to INR 800-1000.

There are places like Pangong where hotels won’t be available. In these places, tents will be available at INR 200-300 per night. If you choose a homestay instead, it will cost you around INR 500. But all in all, a Ladakh trip cost for such requirements would be within INR 1000. This will include toll, permit fees, entry into the monastery, etc.

Food: The food options in Ladakh are various. If you decide to eat at a place like Dhaba then you will get your meals at INR 60-70 per person. The same meal at a place like Changspa Road could cost you INR 150-170 or even more per person. This rate can get even higher in high-end restaurants. You can keep the cost of a trip to Ladakh Travelling in check with the choice of your meals. Every little expenditure counts to increase or lessen your overall Ladakh holiday budget. For instance, if you eat vegetarian meals, it will cost you less as compared to non-vegetarian food that costs you more.
Keep a reusable bottle to drink water, so that you can fill it at regular intervals. It can save you money but more importantly, it can help in preserving nature and keeping the premises clean.

Miscellaneous expenses: Considering all the expenses, if you keep it to the bare minimum then you should be able to make it with the above said INR 11,000-14,000 per day. This will include all your entry fares and other sightseeing costs. This is very subjective as you may also want to do some shopping which will add to your total Ladakh trip cost

There are various modes of travelling to Ladakh, traveling is the major expense. According to the availability of vehicles, your trip could go on for 18-20 days. You will have the option of using hired taxis or shared taxis operated by travel guides. This is one of the major methods by which you can travel.

Self-driving with your own vehicle: If you are self-driving to Ladakh, then you will have to consider a separate cost for fuel, which will be relative to your vehicle. According to the mileage your vehicle provides, you will have to spend somewhere between INR 11,000-12,000. This is an addition to your Leh Ladakh trip cost with food, accommodation, and miscellaneous things. You can divide the cost amongst people travelling with you accordingly.

Self-driving with a rented vehicle: If you are renting out vehicles then you will get good quality vehicles for about INR 1,200- 1,400 every day. For a 14 day trip, the Ladakh trip expense will be somewhere around INR 16,000. Taking fuel costs into consideration your travelling expenses will fall under somewhere between INR 20,000 – 40,000.

Private hired taxi: You can also come to Leh using a privately hired taxi. Considering all expenses for a 14-day trip this will amount to somewhere between INR 22,000 – 23,000.

Shared Taxi A shared taxi is the most common method to travel in Ladakh. If you are travelling from Srinagar to Leh or Manali to Leh it will cost you around INR 3000. Local sightseeing will cost you around INR 4,000 – 5,000 more. Leh Ladakh trip cost The total cost of hiring a shared taxi will be about INR 8,000 – 10,000 in total.
You can surf the Internet to find out taxi drivers that are approved by the taxi union. You can contact them to get discounts of up to 12 %. However, it depends on the availability of discounts and deals at the time of your trip. Of Course, speaking to them in person will help you haggle better than speaking to them over the phone.

Public Transportation: If you are prepared to wait for longer periods then you can use public transportation. This will help you reduce the cost of the Ladakh trip considerably. But your food and accommodation costs will go up as you will have to stop and wait for buses as their frequency is very low.

By Bike: Since bike trips to Ladakh are among the highlights of this place, here is a quick look at the cost of a Ladakh bike trip –

Rental rates vary depending on the company and bikes. these are the decisive factors of your Ladakh bike trip cost. Per-day rental comes about INR 1200- 2000 depending on the bike chosen. So, a 10-day trip costs around INR 12,000 – 20,000.

You have to bear the fule expenses. So, calculate the fuel and rental costs as per the distance you will be covering. It is important to note that bikes rented outside Leh are not allowed in Ladakh. So, a bike rented in Manali or Srinagar can be taken only till Leh. To visit places like Nubra, Pangong, and Moriri; you have to rent another bike from Leh.

In this case, you will pay a daily rental of that bike. Then add another INR 10,000 to the cost of the bike you rented in Leh.

If you are taking a rented bike from Manali and dropping in Srinagar, or vice versa, an additional cost of about INR 10,000 will be there as transportation cost.

Leh Ladakh Permit Cost

Costs of the Inner Line Permit for Ladakh are divided into two parts –

  • INR 400 per person for environment tax
  • INR 20 per person per day for wildlife protection fee

So for example, if you need a 5-day permit for two people, the calculation will be something like –

  • INR 800 for environment tax (400 x 2). This is a one-time cost.  Once you have paid, you need not worry about per-day costs.
  • INR 200 per day for wildlife protection fee (20 x 2 x 5).

Hence the total permit cost of INR 1,000 for permits (800 + 200) will be added to your  Ladakh tour cost. If you want to get the permits through the hotel you are staying in, then you would pay INR 1220, adding INR 110 per person as the agent charges. Depending on the number of people you are travelling with and the number of days in your itinerary, you can use the same calculation to know the total amount to pay.

Along with the above information, take the following points into consideration for a budget trip to Ladakh –

  • In the area of accommodation, food and travel permit, the cost will be around INR 800-1000 in total.
  • If you are self-driving with your own bike then it will cost you around INR 9,000 – 10,000 for the duration of the trip.

If you are using your own car to drive up to Ladakh, you will incur a fuel cost of around INR 15,000 – 20,000; adding to your budget for the Leh Ladakh trip.

  •  If you rent a vehicle then you will have to pay a rent of around INR 10,000-15,000 for the whole trip, along with fuel costs separately.
  • If renting a car, add costs of rental along with the fuel costs similar to what you would have to calculate if you had chosen a bike.
  • If you are travelling by taxi, then according to the stops you make the costs will go up to some INR 50,000 – 60,000. Of Course, you can divide the cost by the people you are travelling with.
  • If you travel by bus, the cheapest means of transportation will only cost you around INR 5000.
  • Travelling by shared taxi will cost you around INR 8,000 – 10,000.
  • The best way to reduce Leh Ladakh trip costs is to travel in a group. As the fuel costs the most, if you travel by your own vehicle, this gets divided among the group and the cost per person will be way less.
