Planning a 10 Days Budget Bike Trip to Ladakh

A bike trip to Leh Ladakh – sounds exciting and thrilling! Not just that, but it’s very adventurous too. One must be physically fit and mentally strong to endure this challenging trip. With beauty comes a great attitude! It is no different from Ladakh. Ladakh – one of the most beautiful places in the world, has its own tough attitude that you will have to deal with. The high-altitude unpredictable weather conditions and rough terrain make the bike tour a journey to remember forever.

No special bike riding skill or experience is required for this trip. However, your passion and determination of going through it and of course, you need to have a valid license and know how to ride a bike with manual gear transmission (preferably powerful bike such as the Royal Enfield
Himalayan or Bullet). But proper preparation, planning, and awareness is the key to make sure that you are able to enjoy and complete your bike trip to Leh Ladakh.

The cost of the bike tour would depend largely on your preference for stay and food. Leh Ladakh region, though not a very expensive location does have few luxurious options. Whether you want this to be a budget journey or a lavish one, it is entirely up to you. Besides, there is the cost of the day journey which will include the bike rent (if not riding your own), fuel, lunch and maintenance cost if any. All this for the duration of your 8 to 10 days trip planned could be between INR 20k to INR 70k.

Here’s an estimated cost break-up per person per day;

Stay budget – INR 200 to INR 5,000
Based on your comfort preference, you can opt for accommodation in either a roadside tent or a proper hotel structure or homestay. This is highly subjective to the route you are taking and the location as well. For example, tents are available on the Manali Leh highway ranging from INR 200 to INR 1,000. At Jispa village or Baralacha Pass, you will find stay, including dinner for as low as INR 250 whereas at Sarchu it would cost INR 1,000.

Plan your day journey and halt location such that you are able to check-in early in the evening. As late evening after 6 pm or 7 pm, the price is higher, and negotiations don’t work since they know you are not in a position to travel further.

Food budget – INR 300 to INR 1,000
Low cost breakfast option consisting of Maggi or omelette bread with tea is available widely across Ladakh at around INR 60 to INR 70. Basic lunch can be estimated at INR 100 and dinner at INR 150. This largely depends on your taste and choice.

Bike budget – INR 1,400 to INR 2,500
If you ride on your own machine, then you may skip this cost, but if you are planning to hire one, then you will want to consider this. Best suited for the bike tour of Leh Ladakh is the Royal Enfield Himalayan or Bullet. Go for a 500cc or 350cc model for better capacity and power to ride up the steep slopes. Most riders there would be using this motorcycle, and it is easy to get help in case of any difficulty with the bike. Besides, local mechanics are very familiar with the Royal Enfield, and spare parts are also easily available.

You may get a refundable security deposit of INR 5,000 to INR 10,000 depending on the condition of the bike, to be paid to the rental service provider. It is recommended that you choose the bike carefully, ensure it is properly serviced and take a trial run if required.

Fuel budget – INR 9,500 to INR 10,500
On average, a bike tour of Leh Ladakh is likely to cover a total distance of around 2600kms to 2800 km. Assuming your bike trip itinerary falls in this range, then you should safely account for the said budget. Fuel consumption is dependent on the condition of the bike and the terrain you are riding on. In Ladakh, the mileage of the bike is lower by almost 50% of the usual average.

While riding in Ladakh, it is best to be self-sufficient, and to that extent, it helps to be equipped with basic spare parts such as spark plug, clutch plates, brake lever, headlight bulb, clutch cable etc. You may want to keep a budget of an additional amount of INR 2,000 for this.

For many parts of your journey you will be riding under 30kmph speed. Breakdown is very likely so learn some first aid remedies for your bike and carry basic spares with you. Good knowledge of your machine helps a great deal.

It is important to invest in good protective riding gear for this trip such as helmet, knee and elbow guards, weatherproof gloves, shoes and proper riding jacket, reflective clothing, sunglasses etc. Also, carry a sleeping bag for roadside camping if needed. Personally venturing out on your own brings you a completely different satisfaction but if you have a limited number of days in hand and want to enjoy to the fullest without much hassle then you can even opt for group tour packages. It is advisable to be part of a group bike tour if you are a first timer or consider taking a bike ride package tour. That way you will always have assistance in case of a breakdown or in other difficult situations.
