What are the Do’s and Don’ts in Ladakh?

Ladakh is a dreamy location and everyone should visit it once in their life. It has the brightest rainbows and the bluest skies. We have seen only pretty photos of Ladakh but there are patchy roads, heavy traffic jams, and poor mobile networks all across the region, which you should avoid. You might have never been there, so it is obvious to make some mistakes or be unprepared for some parts of the journey.

To make your trip to Ladakh as pleasant and trouble-free as possible, we have compiled a list of what to do in Leh Ladakh and what not that will help you enjoy the trip even more.

Do’s

1. Carry medicines and medical supplies everywhere

The first answer to the question of what to do in Leh Ladakh is carrying basic and important medicines. It seems like added weight but you won’t find any random medical stories. The medicines that you should carry in your medical kit should be ibuprofen, paracetamol, medicine for diarrhoea, constipation, and height, and any prescribed medicine. Throw in a cream, balm, and petroleum jelly along with a few band-aids. Also, carry toilet paper because you will rarely find washrooms and if you do, they don’t have enough water or any toilet paper.

2. Stay at Hotels with Oxygen Supply

You are at a high altitude, which can make you uncomfortable as the oxygen levels are low. So, one of the important things to do is before you book the hotel, confirm if they have oxygen supplies.

3. Take a Day’s Rest After Reaching Ladakh

Yet another answer to what to do in Leh Ladakh is the moment you reach there, you need to spend at least 36 hours adjusting to the high altitude and change in weather. The rule remains the same whether you fly to Ladakh or travel by road. Taking a flight to Chandigarh and then travelling to Ladakh by road gives you time to adjust to the change as the altitude increases gradually.

4. Carry a Bottle of Water and Snacks Everywhere You Go

You won’t find grocery stores or snack selling shops along the road, so stack up on water and snacks. Carry chips, some juice, and energy bars with you.

Don’ts

1. Use Google Maps

If you follow Google Maps blindly, you will reach some completely different places. So, what not to do on the Leh trip is don’t completely rely on Google maps. Carry a physical map with you, ask the locals for direction, or hire a guide. Also, the duration mentioned online is always wrong. For example, the distance between Gulmarg and Kargil is 230 kilometres, which Google Maps mentions taking four hours but in reality, it takes at least 12 hours.

2. Make too Many Stops During Your Road Journey

Start your road trips early and don’t stop every 10 minutes for photos. It will only delay your trip and by the time you reach the destination, it will be too late and you will miss its beauty. Also, you don’t know the roads, so it’s better to not stop frequently other than loo breaks and for meals.

3. Expect Good Connectivity or Mobile Connection

You won’t get strong connectivity or mobile connection after Kargil. Airtel works in Leh City and BSNL offers connectivity in other major cities of Ladakh including Leh city, Nubra Valley, and Pangong Lake. Most hotels and guesthouses offer WiFi that works at 3G speed.

4. Use Plastic Bags

Last but not least, what not to do in Leh is using plastic bags. Ladakh has officially banned plastic bags, so avoid carrying them around. Also, littering plastic or other waste around is prohibited. Carry a garbage bag with you everywhere for the waste.

Meet as many locals as you can and spend your time in Ladakh like a local to make the most out of your trip.
