Leh Ladakh Bike Trip from Pune: Route, Cost, Distance & Travel Guide

Planning a Leh Ladakh Bike Trip from Pune is a very different experience. The journey itself becomes part of the holiday, with long mountain roads, high passes, changing landscapes and several days on the motorcycle. Pune to Leh is roughly 2,450–2,600 kms by road, depending on whether you travel via Srinagar or Manali. Once you add the Ladakh circuit and the return journey to Pune, the total distance can cross 5,000 kms.

We have Ladakh bike packages where the motorcycle journey begins from places such as Manali or Srinagar rather than Pune. These trips are shorter because you travel to the roadhead first and then begin the Himalayan ride. So before you book a Pune to Leh Ladakh bike trip, first decide which of these two trips you actually mean.

Highlights for Leh Ladakh Bike Trip from Pune

What you want to know

Quick answer

Pune to Ladakh distance by bike

Around 2,450–2,600 km one way to Leh, depending on the route

Pune to Ladakh bike trip cost

An own-bike round trip can easily move into the ?60,000–?1,00,000+ range once fuel, stays, food, servicing and other expenses are included

Pune to Ladakh by road on bike best route

Pune–Srinagar–Kargil–Leh is a gradual approach; a Srinagar entry and Manali return gives you a full circuit

Recommended time

Around 18–22 days for a proper Pune–Ladakh–Pune ride, depending on the circuit and riding pace

Main Ladakh stops

Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Lamayuru and other destinations depending on available days

Alternative package option

Travel from Pune to Manali or Srinagar and join a Ladakh motorcycle itinerary there instead of starting bike ride at Pune

Road season

Mainly June to September for the complete high-altitude road journey

The distance and budget above are planning figures, not fixed package rates. A rider covering only Pune–Leh and back will spend differently from someone adding Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri or a Srinagar–Leh–Manali circuit.

Pune to Ladakh Distance by Bike

The Pune to Ladakh distance by bike is around 2,450–2,600 kms one way to Leh. The exact distance can change a little depending on whether you ride through Srinagar or take the Manali route. That means a return ride to Pune can be around 4,900–5,200 kms, excluding the local riding in Ladakh. Once you add Leh–Nubra–Pangong and other detours, a complete Pune–Ladakh–Pune motorcycle journey can easily cross 5,500 kms. In the recent past, a Pune–Leh–Pune bike trip, for example, covered around 5,800 kms over 18 days, showing just how different a Pune-origin ride is from a 9N/10D Manali-based bike package.

So when calculating your distance, don't use the 434 kms Srinagar–Leh or 473 kms Manali–Leh figures as the total trip distance. Those figures cover only the two main mountain approaches into Leh.

Pune to Ladakh by Road on Bike: Best Route

There are two ways to enter Ladakh by road.

Route 1: Pune → Srinagar → Kargil → Leh

A typical route is:

Pune → Nashik → Indore → Rajasthan/Delhi region → Jammu → Srinagar → Sonamarg → Zoji La → Drass → Kargil → Lamayuru → Leh

The Srinagar–Leh Highway is around 434 kms according to the District Leh administration. It passes through Sonamarg, Drass and Kargil before entering Ladakh.

For riders coming from Pune, this route has another advantage: the approach towards Leh is more gradual than the Manali side. It also gives you the opportunity to stop at Kargil and Lamayuru before reaching Leh.

Route 2: Pune → Manali → Jispa → Sarchu → Leh

The other approach is:

Pune → Nashik → Indore → Rajasthan → Chandigarh → Manali → Jispa → Sarchu → Pang → Tanglang La → Leh

The Manali–Leh Highway is around 473 kms and crosses several high-altitude sections, including Baralacha La and Tanglang La.

This side is a major part of the motorcycle experience, but the altitude rises quickly with several remote stretches of rough roads.

A Full Pune Circuit

If you have enough time, you can ride:

Pune → Srinagar → Kargil → Leh → Nubra → Pangong → Leh → Sarchu → Manali → Chandigarh → Pune

This gives you both major Ladakh approaches instead of returning on the same road.

For a first long-distance ride from Pune, the Srinagar side can be used for the approach and the Manali side for the return. The exact direction should still be planned around the road status during your travel dates.

How Many Days Are Needed for a Pune to Ladakh Bike Trip?

This is where the earlier itinerary needed a major correction.

A Pune to Ladakh bike trip cannot realistically be treated like a 9N/10D Manali–Ladakh package. Those packages begin much closer to Ladakh. For an own-bike Pune circuit, keeping around 18–22 days is more practical.

A possible plan could look like this:

Day

Travel plan

Day 1

Pune → North India (Chandigarh or Delhi)

Day 2

Continue towards Delhi/Chandigarh

Day 3

Delhi/Chandigarh → Jammu

Day 4

Jammu → Srinagar

Day 5

Srinagar → Kargil

Day 6

Kargil → Leh via Lamayuru

Day 7

Leh rest and acclimatisation

Day 8

Leh local sightseeing

Day 9

Leh → Nubra Valley

Day 10

Nubra Valley → Pangong

Day 11

Pangong → Leh

Day 12

Leh buffer/rest day

Day 13

Leh → Sarchu

Day 14

Sarchu → Manali

Day 15

Manali → Chandigarh/Delhi

Day 16

Continue south towards Pune

Day 17

Continue towards Pune

Day 18

Reach Pune / buffer

This is a planning framework, not a fixed itinerary. If you want to add Tso Moriri, Hanle, Zanskar or extra rest days, the trip will need more time.

Pune to Ladakh Bike Trip Cost

The Pune to Ladakh bike trip cost needs to be calculated differently from the price of a Manali-based bike package. If you are taking your own motorcycle from Pune, there is no bike-rental cost, but you are paying for a much longer ride. For an own-bike Pune–Ladakh–Pune trip, you can roughly plan your budget around these expenses:

Type of Expense

Estimated Cost

Fuel for 5,000–5,500+ km

?18,000–?24,000

Accommodation

?15,000–?30,000

Food

?12,000–?20,000

Bike servicing, oil, punctures and minor repairs

?5,000–?10,000

Permits/entry/environment-related charges, where applicable

?1,000–?3,000+

Emergency/buffer money

?5,000–?10,000

Approx. total

?56,000–?97,000+

The fuel calculation depends on your motorcycle's actual mileage and the route. For example, a bike giving 25–30 km/l over a 5,000–5,500 km journey would need roughly 167–220 litres of fuel. Fuel prices also vary along the route. Your accommodation cost can come down if two riders share rooms. It can go up if you choose better hotels or need extra nights because of weather, fatigue or road delays. If you are comparing packages, we always recommend checking the starting point of the bike journey in the package.

Pune to Ladakh Bike Trip: Own Bike or Package?

There are two very different ways to plan this trip.

Taking your own bike from Pune means the journey starts at your doorstep. You have complete control over the motorcycle and route, but you also take responsibility for fuel, servicing, breakdowns, accommodation and the extra days required for the long-distance ride.

Joining a bike package from Manali or Srinagar means you travel from Pune to the designated starting point and begin the bike ride from there. Our current packages include motorcycle itineraries from these Himalayan roadheads, including accommodation, meals and other inclusions as per the selected package.

Neither should be confused with the other when calculating the trip budget.

How to Reach Ladakh from Pune

You have three practical options.

By Your Own Bike

Start from Pune and ride towards either Srinagar or Manali before entering Ladakh. This is the longest riding option and needs the most time.

Fly to Leh

You can also fly from Pune to Leh, usually with a stopover depending on the flights available on your travel date. Once you reach Leh by air, give your body enough time to adjust to the altitude, then begin your Ladakh bike ride travelling to places like Nubra Valley or Pangong.

Check out our Ladakh bike trip packages for bike rentals and other arrangements included to make your bike trip memorable.

Travel to Manali or Srinagar and Join a Bike Trip

This works well if your main goal is to ride the Himalayan roads without spending several days riding from Pune through the plains.

We offer bike itineraries where the motorcycle portion begins from Manali or Srinagar. Our current package listings show routes such as Manali–Ladakh–Manali and Srinagar–Leh–Manali combinations.

Things to Carry on Pune to Leh Ladakh Bike Trip

For a Pune to Leh bike trip, your luggage needs to work for both long highway riding and cold, high-altitude conditions.

Riding gear

  • Certified full-face helmet
  • A good riding jacket and trousers
  • Proper riding gloves
  • Sturdy riding boots
  • Knee and elbow guards
  • A waterproof outer layer
  • Warm inner layers for colder stretches
  • Thermal socks
  • A balaclava or neck warmer

Bike and travel essentials

  • Valid driving licence
  • Keep your motorcycle registration and insurance documents with you
  • Carry the PUC certificate, if required
  • Download offline maps for stretches with poor network coverage
  • Take a power bank along with the necessary charging cables
  • Carry a puncture repair kit
  • Pack basic tools and a few spare fuses
  • Keep some spare bungee cords handy
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses for the road
  • Any personal medicines you may need
  • A small first-aid kit
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Some cash for remote stretches

If you're riding your own motorcycle, get it serviced before leaving Pune. Check the tyres, brakes, chain, clutch, lights and battery rather than waiting for a problem to show up on the highway.

Best Places to Visit in Ladakh

A Ladakh bike trip from Pune gives you the freedom to add places beyond the standard Leh circuit, provided you have enough days.

Leh

Use Leh as your base for acclimatisation and local sightseeing. Magnetic Hill, for example, is around 30 kms from Leh on the Leh–Kargil road.

Nubra Valley

Nubra lies around 120 kms from Leh and is known for the Hunder sand dunes, monasteries, orchards and the Bactrian camel population.

Pangong Lake

Pangong is one of Ladakh's most recognisable landscapes. The lake sits at around 14,270 ft and can be reached by road from Leh.

Lamayuru

If you enter through Srinagar, Lamayuru is a natural stop on the route to Leh. The District Leh administration places it around 115 kms from Leh and describes its distinctive landscape as the “Moonland” of Ladakh.

Tso Moriri and Zanskar

These are better treated as additions for a longer trip. Don't add every remote destination simply because it is available on the map. A Pune-origin ride already involves a substantial number of highway kilometres.

Tips to Book Leh Ladakh Bike Tour Packages from Pune Online

Before booking Leh Ladakh bike tour packages from Pune, check the following:

  1. Find out where the motorcycle journey begins.
Is the bike being provided in Manali, Srinagar or another location?
  2. Check the exact number of riding days.
A 10-day package may refer only to the mountain motorcycle circuit, not your complete journey from Pune.
  3. Check the motorcycle.
Confirm the model, rental arrangement and whether a security deposit applies.
  4. Read the inclusions.
Look for accommodation, meals, fuel, mechanic support, backup vehicle and permits separately.
  5. Ask about luggage arrangements.
This becomes especially important on a long motorcycle trip.
  6. Check what happens during a road closure.
Mountain weather can affect the itinerary, so understand the operator's process before booking.
  7. Compare the complete price, not just the headline number.
A cheaper package may have fewer inclusions.

If you are specifically looking for a Leh Ladakh bullet trip from Pune, confirm the exact Royal Enfield model and where the motorcycle is handed over.

Pune to Leh Ladakh by Road on Bike Safety Guidelines

A Pune-origin motorcycle trip involves many more riding hours than a short Ladakh circuit. Don't try to recover lost time by turning every highway day into a 600–700 kms riding day. Once you reach the mountains, your pace will naturally change.

Keep these things in mind during the ride:

  • Make sure you have proper protective riding gear on throughout the journey.
  • Before setting off on a major stretch, check the weather and road conditions.
  • Fill up the tank whenever possible, especially before long stretches with few fuel stops.
  • Stay away from swollen streams or water crossings that don’t look safe.
  • On unfamiliar mountain roads, it’s better to avoid riding after dark.
  • Keep offline maps on your phone, as mobile connectivity can drop without warning.
  • On long riding days, stop for regular breaks and give yourself some time to rest.
  • Don't continue riding if you develop severe headache, dizziness, unusual breathlessness or other concerning symptoms.
  • Keep emergency contacts and important documents accessible.
  • Carry enough water and keep some cash for places where digital payments may not work.

Altitude is something you need to take seriously on a Ladakh ride. Once you reach Leh, give yourself time to acclimatise before heading to higher places such as Nubra Valley and Pangong. Weather can also change the road conditions quickly. Heavy rain can lead to flash floods, landslides and unsafe water crossings, so a road that was fine when you left may not remain the same later in the day.

Why Book Leh Ladakh Bike Tour Packages from Pune with Us?

At Go2Ladakh, we offer different ways to experience Ladakh by motorcycle. You can choose from pre-planned bike itineraries starting from Himalayan roadheads, or speak to us about building a trip around your preferred route and available days. Our current bike-tour options include routes covering Manali, Leh, Nubra, Pangong, Srinagar and other parts of Ladakh, depending on the selected itinerary.

Best Time for a Pune to Ladakh Bike Trip

The main road journey needs to be planned around the opening of the high-altitude highways.

The District Leh administration currently lists the Srinagar–Leh Highway as generally open from May to November/December, while the Manali–Leh Highway generally operates from May/June to September/October, with actual access depending on conditions.

For a complete Pune to Ladakh bike trip, June to September is the practical period to consider, particularly if your route uses both highways. The exact travel date still matters. Check the latest road status before leaving Pune, especially if you are planning early in the season or towards the end of the road season.

Plan Your Pune to Ladakh Bike Trip

A Pune to Ladakh bike trip is a serious road journey, not simply an extended version of a Leh bike tour. If you're riding your own motorcycle from Pune, plan for the additional kilometres, fuel, servicing, accommodation and days on the road. If you don't want to spend several days riding from Pune to the Himalayan foothills, we also have bike itineraries where you can travel to Manali or Srinagar and begin the motorcycle journey from there.

Talk to us at Go2Ladakh and we can help you choose the route and itinerary that fits the kind of Ladakh ride you actually want to take.
